ConClusion

The Meater Plus Probe is a great piece of kit to add to your cooking utensils.

It does have it’s issues though but all in all a wonderful buy if you can afford the luxury and cook a lot of meat.

Whats in the box?

It’s kept very straightforward, you get the charging block and the probe. The packaging is also solid and we love the fact it’s all cardboard and paper meaning we can throw it all in the recycling bin.

Meater Plus What comes in the box

How it works

When you get the probe out of the box the instructions are easy;

  1. Pull the tab to connect the battery

  2. Let the probe charge for 4 hours

  3. Download the Meater APP

  4. Follow the instructions in the APP

I’ll be honest, I imagined it to have been a little harder than it was. Not sure why.

From here you literally click to set-up a cook then select the meat etc. if you want a custom internal temperature you can enter this and the probe will then start it’s process.

Then onto the estimated time to cook! 👍👍

Estimates the time it will take to cook

The Meater Plus probe itself is great but the App that comes with it makes it.

The first piece of meat I cooked when testing the probe was a full chicken. We love the taste of a perfectly smoked chicken on a Sunday in our house.

The app tells you the temperature and you set the internal temperature you want the meat to reach.

After a few minutes in the smoker/oven the app will give you an estimate of the time it will take to reach your goal temperature.

It’s such a great way to make sure you don’t end up with a dry bird in this case or any other type of meat you are cooking.

This video cooking a Roast Beef shows you all the features:

What grills can you use it on?

The Meater Plus probe can be used in a traditional oven, BBQ, frying pan or as we prefer a wood pellet smoker.

Basically anywhere you are cooking meat you can use the probe to get an accurate reading of the internal temperature.

Is the range as advertised?

I bought the Meater Plus due to living in the UK and needing to have the back doors closed most of the time due to it not being that warm.

Meater claim an “up to” 50m range. If this was the case I’d be able to walk across the field at the back of our house and still have the signal, let alone connect from inside the back doors.

From what I have seen, you need to be a lot closer than the advertised 50m. If I stand further than 3/4m away from the back doors (10m in total from the smoker) I lose the signal which is not ideal.

I also misread the information surrounding monitoring your cook via WiFi. Basically, you need a second phone or “smart” device to connect the Meater block to and then you can connect to it from your actual phone via the Meater Link.

Is Meater worth the money?

I do love this kit! The probe is an investment but if you are cooking meat on a regular basis or smoking meat regularly it is a great tool to have at your disposal.

I do have a couple of complaints at the same time. I did expect it to be easier to use on WiFi, I have a Traeger 780 pro and using the wired probe I can see internal temperature even stood watching my sons football team and turn the grill off form there.

Meater vs Meater Plus

I’ll be honest, if the range on the Meater Plus is so much shorter than advertised I hate to think what the range on the standard Meater would be.

But, if you can keep doors open and want an easy to use wireless probe they’re great.

Meater Plus Battery Life

The probe should last between 24-48 hours of use. I have yet to run out of battery life on mine to be honest. Every time I put it back in the charging dock it just gets charged back to full. I don’t know of any meat that would drain the battery even on a long cook such as a pork butt or Brisket.

What other users on Reddit think about the Meater Plus Probe

I’ll be honest, the initial feedback from the /r/pelletgrills subreddit community. I spend a bit of time in this subreddit as I find it very helpful and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love seeing all the cooks coming out of the smokers!

The first reply was:

“they are utter shit products. I bought 3 of their “plus” products, and neither worked as advertised in my pellet smoker. The blocks couldn’t “see” the sensors except for when the smoker was open. what’s the point of these things if you can’t use them with the smoker closed?

I returned them, but had to argue about a restocking fee AND I had to pay return shipping.” Reddit user Careful_Square1742

I haven’t had to speak to support as of yet with mine (touch wood) but I can only imagine this sort of experience leaves a bitter taste.

Another reply was more positive:

“It’s not without a few quarks but if you can afford them, they are great to have for grilling and or baking.”
